Nosferatu Movie Explained (SPOILERS)

Показать описание
A video essay (with spoilers) about the dark deeper meaning of 'Nosferatu' (2024), a remake of F. W. Murnau's 'Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror' (1922), which was itself an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' (1897). This new adaptation is written and directed by Robert Eggers and stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, Willem Dafoe and more. In this video I get into its deeper themes and symbolism. I look at the nature of evil, the Enlightenment, vampirism as an inversion of Christ, Jacob wrestling with God at Peniel and more.

I think it's interesting that the evil wasn't summoned out of greed or lust or wrath but loneliness. This is true for modern people, also.any people turn to evil out of a deep seated sense of loneliness, isolation, and despair.

The line about being blinded by the enlightenment instantly struck me. Stayed with me days after the film - glad to see an insightful commentary pick up on it too. Great video!

I was fascinated by the depiction of the parallel theming seen in Ellen and Friedrich. Ellen is in a truly vulnerable, unfathomably lonely state when she makes her covenant with Orlok. She ignores the fact that he is this thing; a supernatural, ominous, decayed figure. Yet, considering their deep psychic connection and her susceptibility, she allows herself to be bewitched and bound to him. Later, Friedrich is shown in the mausoleum, falling apart with black plague and grief, mourning the death of his wife and daughters. His anguish, loneliness and despair is so powerful, he exhumes his wife’s corpse from her tomb and “necrophilizes” her (not a real word, I know). Reflecting Ellen, the desperation to cure loneliness is so powerful, intimate relations with a corpse becomes plausible from their inebriated perspectives. On an unrelated note, Friedrich is later seen lying dead on top of his wife’s corpse, choosing to die with the one he loves. Similarly, Orlok, with the sun rising, chooses to die with the one he loves.

4:20 I loved the observation that Knock acts as a depraved John the Baptist, in keeping with the theme, Thomas acts like a naive Judas, giving over someone he loves for a bag of coins

Damn this is the best review I’ve come across about this movie, truly striking parallels between good & evil.

Talking about religious symbolism, not sure how many people have noticed it, at the end when Willem Defoe character picks up the cat and looks through the window you’ll see, or at least to me, a shadow on his cheek forming a cross… Beautiful!

I saw 3 other reviews and this is the only that talks about what I care for, not about the lighting or the architecture or what so and so says. Well done Thomas, you've earned my subscription

I’ve never heard anyone draw parallels between Jesus and vampires but that’s a very interesting reflection and definitely strikes me as true. Excellent work!

Watched the film 2 days ago and I've been watching several reviews of the film and yours is the first one that mention all the "moral" you could say, messages that I noticed the story was sending trough its script and the images. Great review.

Going into this movies last week, I had zero interest, but my s/o suggested it. While he didn’t care for it, I’m glad I did see it. It stayed on my mind for several days. I enjoyed picking up on the parallels to Christ.

Thanks for the analysis! Very insightful. I’m not sure Ellen sacrifices herself as much as she chooses to stop forcing herself to fit in with humans when she knows she belongs to darkness. She definitely wants to save everybody because she is kind and genuinely loves Thomas, but ultimately she is knows her true place is with Orlok. The way she holds him at the end is so tender and loving, I can’t imagine that she would if she only saw that action as sacrificing herself.

I love these kind of insights. I was on the edge of my seat during the sleep paralysis scenes, I understand that too well!

As we consume the flesh of animals, we too steal their life to nourish our own. Life exists because Death exists. They are the two faces of the same coin.
