Tbh, one of the reasons why I love Mello is because he shows more human emotions than L and Near, he gets angry, gets easily irritated. And I think that breaks the cliche that all genius, smart people are just soulless robots, who don't show any emotion.

I watch this everyday, religiously. Mello and Matt deserved better. They shouldn't have been killed and Mello certainly doesn't deserve all the hatred he gets from fans. He was way different from Near and L, he used violence along with intelligence and risked his life in order to capture Kira. Sometimes I feel, he was smarter than Near. He used violent means and successfully obtained the information about the fake Death Note rules, he even figured out that there was a fake death note in circulation while Near had no clue about it. Near, sort of used Mello for his own investigation. Near was ready to trade Mello's real name for information from Light, he already suspected to be Kira, he worked with Light to capture Mello and his mafia and his main investigation and actual work began only after Mello gave him info about the fake rules which he had worked hard to find out. Mello even had a very strong and intimidating personality that even scared a Shinigami. Overall, Mello had a very respectful personality. When he kidnaped Sayu, he never intended to torture/harm her. He didn't even want to kill Soichiro, but then had no choice, because he had been ambushed and Soichiro had written half of his name in the Death Note. Self protection and survival forced him to do what he never wanted to do. He was even respectful towards Takada. Although it can be said that him not checking her clothes himself and making sure she had nothing on her was his own carelessness/stupidity which led to his self inflicted death, people forget to notice that he was being respectful towards a woman and chose not to interfere with her privacy, because if he would have personally stripped her, he would then be hated for being a pervert who had no respect for women and their much needed privacy. He also chose to respectfully and voluntarily withdraw from Wammy's, allow Near to be the successor and go on his own path to capture Kira and prove his worth. He worked hard to prove himself and chose to not cooperate with Near as he accepted that he had inferiority complexes and his competitive nature would not allow him to work with Near. But then, despite his dislike for Near and competitiveness, he kept in touch with Near's SPK in order to know Near's theories and basically, although not know to Near at first, cooperated with him to capture Kira that led to his and Matt's death. He said that if Takada needed to be kidnapped to expose the truth about the fake notebook and someone needed to do it, he might as well do it, even if he was risking his life. Mello wasn't a villainous character or a cruel dumb bitch who used others and innocent people to satisfy his ego. He was a true detective who worked hard in order to achieve success. At least, Near gave him credits for his work, in the end and didn't let his and Matt's deaths be wasted. Mello truly deserved to succeed L. Lawliet.
