For anyone wondering how the anemones know the difference, they don’t. They try to sting clownfish just like anything else that touches them.

Anemones sting prey to paralyze it in a similar way to jellyfish. Along with eating little particles floating around in the water, they just hope a fish comes close enough to brush against their tentacles, and they then fire little barbs filled with neurotoxins that paralyze prey, allowing them to easily pull that prey into their mouth.

A clownfish is no different, and it’s possible for them to be eaten, but in general clownfishes will host anemones that they take a liking to. They have a thicker mucus that protects them from the barbs fired at them by the anemones, which means they’re protected from larger swimming predators that might eat them, and in return their waste and/or food scraps will help to feed the anemones.

Some species of clownfish aren’t born with a thick enough mucus to protect them from the stings of anemones. In order to host an anemone they like, they’ll slowly acclimate to the venomous barbs by brushing up against the tentacles and purposely getting stung little by little. Over time they develop an immunity to the venom, meaning they can be in the anemone while being stung, without becoming paralyzed from the venom.

So long story short, anemones don’t know the difference and they try to kill anything that touches them. Clownfish overall are often just extra slimy. Some aren’t super slimy but they make themselves immune. Also, not all clownfish will host anemones even though it’s common behaviour. Clownfish are picky. If there aren’t any anemones available they like, they hide elsewhere.

He is trying to eat Nemo the anemone doesn’t know it’s a different thing it assumes food- the skin of Emo Nemo is resistant so it does no damage and he can just take a nap as it tries to kill him.
