The F-16 was built to be relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain compared to earlier generations of fighter aircrafts. All its technical solutions were focused on high maneuverability without major power losses. Being highly agile, the F-16 was the first American fighter specifically designed both to pull 9-g maneuvers and reach a maximum speed of over Mach 2.
All this turned it into the most numerous 4th generation fighter jet. More than 4,600 airplanes have been constructed since production approval.
