Fears Asia's Mekong River is in crisis - BBC News

The Mekong River ecosystem is on the verge of collapse due to the accumulative effects of climate change.

Hydropower dams, drought and human-made activities such as deforestation and sand mining have also caused water levels to drop to their lowest in more than 60 years.

The Mekong flows for nearly 5,000km (3,100 miles) from Himalayan glaciers in Tibet, through China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia before reaching the South China Sea in Vietnam.

“Together, climate impact and dam restrictions are changing the way that the Mekong flows - much for the worse", says Brian Eyler who runs the Mekong Dam Monitor at the Stimson Center in Washington DC.

The Mekong is fueled by the Himalayan glacier melt. Those glaciers are shrinking at a faster pace than ever detected in the geological record. Scientist predict that at the current rate, they will lose 75% of their volume by 2100.

These dams will quickly become ineffective and essentially cutoff downstream nations from any usable volume of water.

We've known about this impending disaster for over a decade now and yet projects like these continue to be developed.

The management of an international river is always very complex, due to the selfishness of states which all seek to benefit as much as possible from the resource, at the expense of other states. In the case of the Mekong, whose management is ensured by dictatorial and corrupt governments, we can be sure that the predicted ecological catastrophe will occur, and that the millions of people living or surviving thanks to the river will be sacrificed, for the benefit of the leaders of these countries. The world is not out of the woods...

The super dam in the mountains on the Tibetan plateau prolly has alot to do with it..all the dams need better control and management.
