The alien angle. There were actual aliens in this show as Bear could tell you. He got killed because of one! It seems the flying ship was everywhere problems occurred almost like the aliens were playing a game with the humans and watching them kill eachother!

This series is absolutely superb, by far the the best thing on TV in the UK at the moment, gotta hand it to the Yanks, you make great television.

Kid, great review. You got A LOT of the plot wrong though! Hanzee didn't tell the Getharts that Dodd was dead! He told them that the KC Mafia has Dodd hostage at the hotel! Floyd NEVER had a deal with Hank and Lou! Hanzee planned to betray the Gerharts when he called the family and said that KC has Dodd captive at the hotel. Btw, Floyd definitely did send hitman after "The Butcher of Luverne" aka Ed and Peggy! She said she wanted the butcher dead! Hanzee had to drink out of the hose, they called him a mutt and he wanted to start his own empire! Which he does when he becomes Moses Tripoli, the Fargo mob boss from season 1.

I really think the UFO was actually there in the story. I don't think it's just symbolic. I know that turns some people off but when you think about it, it does fit with the story (and certainly the alien obsessed era of the 70s and 80s), in a weird way. I actually love that they had the balls to include a science fiction element in an otherwise realistic setting. In almost any other show, with different writers, this would have failed.

I think the alien element forces you to consider the events and the scale of the story from a totally different perspective. It undermines the whole story in the best possible way, if that makes sense. You would think such a thing would take some of the steam out of the story, but it only serves to reinvigorate. It's like when you realize that something you were so concerned about doesn't really matter. It's like an epiphany. The characters still have their urgency and their drive. If you feel the need to explain away the aliens as being some sort of shared hallucination, I think you just need to be less closed minded about the possibilities of storytelling. There is a way to tastefully incorporate fantastical elements into realistic genres and Fargo is doing it. They earned the UFO.
