One thing worth noting, is that the couch in the picture you showed is at an angle to the camera. (Probably 30-40 degrees). The subject's body is then tilted towards the camera, allowing for her arm to be more naturally in the focus plane, as well as a natural body position.

Hey. The second doesn't give the same feel. Definitely go for a longer lens to get the compression. From the last video it seems as though you have the depth in the room. Is there any way you can move everything further away from the background? You also have a7rii which should help dramatically. Building the bookcase on wheels is a great idea 👌🏽

Wishing you all the best on this project Dave. I have no ideas or helpful comments at this stage, but I learn so much from you and I'm excited to follow your progress on this project.

Do you have any more space to move the camera back and use a longer lens? You may have an easier time throwing the background out of focus if that's an option.

I have to be honest, I'm in tears laughing at that sound at 1:41. Making it even funnier is how you didn't even respond to it, like you're totally used to it.

This is an awesome series... what an adventure.
- I suggest a full frame camera too to maximise the blurry background.
- It also looks like there are some cool angles going on with the couch she is sitting/leaning on and the shelves on the back wall.
- The shelves almost continue the line from the top and bottom of her head too.
- Is there another room in the background too? If so that creates nice layered depth too.

I wish I could show you a picture of the studio I just built in my apartment... I have faux brick panels that I've set up to attach to my wall with magnets. I'm really happy with how it looks. I can change out the panels, to get different looks in the same space, if I want since I used magnets.

I honestly think a longer lens, with more camera to subject distance and subject to background distance will give you a closer result. One more thing to think about. There is always that chance that a background could be a digital printout of an already out of focus shot. Setup the background and get it with the amount of bokeh you want, photograph it, or a custom printed background from Denny Mfg. or other source. Even just a vinyl sticker printed and stuck on foamcore. I know that's a long shot...but can't rule out that it could have been done like that.

Excited to see how it turns out. Why not use an FE. Did you sell your A7S II and I missed it? All those problems would be a lot easier to fix.

Really interesting to follow this project. I guess you're not moving the camera any further back and increasing the focal length/more blur, with a f2.8 due to available space? If so, one solution would be to use a mirror. So, camera would be beside model - mirror where you camera is in this video - mirror is angled and used to shoot scene through?

getting the look, like the 55mm but need to see a little more of you and the background. A lot of these i notice have all white stuff in the background so id buy something from ikea!

Hi Dave,
Is it a possibility that the she was shot well lit in a green screened studio, then the background dropped in and adjusted?

Maybe? The Liberty Insurance commercials with the Statue of Liberty appear to be done that way.

I know this might sound a bit crazy but how about the idea of using the 50mm lens with a wide angle adapter. This would maintain the DOF but give you a wider perspective. The small drop in optical quality would be visible with stills but probably not with video. I might try this later.

The softer focus from being at f1.8 seemed to match much better

Hay Dave, Her background is further back? or its a backdrop photograph.

What's up Colorado Dave? Can I watch a shoot someday? Would be cool to see another CO YouTuber!

Good luck with controlled lighting, think you will be blacking out all the daylight. Or do really quick shoots (no clouds)

Shouldn't ff give you a more shallow dof than with a crop, with eq. focal length and same aperature value? Maybe that's worth a try if changing the distance of the camera to your subject isn't an option? Like that project of yours!

Good luck Dave! Hey, what monitor are you using to look at your view?
