On 7 February 1984, 31-year-old Cyril Ramaphosa was interviewed by ITN's Peter Sharp. A commission of inquiry had been opened in South Africa into the safety of the nation's mines, where around 1,000 miners were killed every year. A representative of the Mine Workers Union, Ramaphosa argued that the fact that safety spending decreased in line with the price of gold proved that profit took priority over workers' lives in the minds of the bosses.

On 29 May, some 28 million South African voters are heading to the polls in the country's seventh democratic general election. The governing African National Congress (ANC), the party once led by the late anti-Apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, is under pressure from opposition parties the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party. As the ANC's current leader, 71-year-old Cyril Ramaphosa is hoping to be re-elected president.
