The Venerable Nikon F2. Tough, Durable and Very Capable, a Hard Camera To Beat.

The Nikon F2 was, at one time, the standard for photojournalists and professional photographers. The Nikon F2 has a number of unique features, a reputation for durability, and uses the amazing Nikon Lenses. A fully mechanical 35mm SLR film camera that has stood the test of time and is still a great choice for analog photography.

Great video! In 1975, I was 19 yrs old when I bought my first Nikon camera it was a black Nikon F2, and being a nature photographer, I got the 55mm f3.5 Micro Nikkor with it, although I wanted the 105mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor. I used my Nikon F2, for about 20 years until the light meter died. I now use the Nikon D850, arguably one of the best DSLR's ever made.

The cds light cell having “memory “ is new information to me. Thanks. Just one small point, explaining that the indexing function is a means of informing the meter what the full of the lens is, is probably helpful for newbies. Thanks again.

Hand assembled in Japan . love my F2 .Sometimes I just take it out to marvel at the engineering involved. My copy I believe made in 1974 making pictures like it was assembled yesterday. I love the old Nikon glass( Lenses) that have character. To me Nikon is the Number 1 brand camera maker. I also have a fantastic condition Nikon F5 if I want the all auto experience both workhorses I believe will probably out last me. So yes fantastic Nikon F2 film photography. grain character of the different Lenses new and old love it. Best wishes from the Rep of Ireland

Great video about my favorite SLR. I was initially resistant to upgrading from my F but the features of easy opening door, longer and shorter exposures, and using 1.5 volt batteries make it the very best for present day use. The hot shoe adaptors were necessary early on because Nikon's proprietary shoe system (which fits right over the rewind knob) never really caught on. Most pros used "potato masher" type flashes so it wasn't important, but very few hobbyists bought the overpriced Nikon flash units, so they came out with the adaptors - there are two models generally available. Finally, I have to say that the round collar for the cable release is much stronger and reliable than the ordinary variety. Until you've broken a shutter button or had a cable release break off in the socket, you don't fully appreciate this! Thanks for an excellent video. Andy

I owned them all, incl. lots of F, and today prefer the F2 eyelevel und the F2S with its big LED light balance. I only need exposure metering in very difficult lighting conditions with little or bad light. The F2 is my favourite camera flanked by Nikkormat EL/Nikon EL2 and F801s. Others are Pentax Spotmatic and Voigtlaender VITOmatic II (perfect 100% rangefinder).

Hell yeah, I've been using mine for about 15 years or so and still use it as my main manual camera! If I go AF I go an F4 personally!

I've got two F2s, an AS with a 55mm f1.2 lens and another (the one with the pyramid style finder, can't remember the designation) but I rarely use them now because of the weight. I'm 63 and have osteoarthritis so either one is very cumbersome to carry. For this reason I mostly use my Olympus OM2n cameras which are half the weight, perform most of the same functions and are easier to carry while using my walking stick. For strong, healthy people the F2 range is beyond legendary, virtually un-destroyable and silky smooth in use. Absolutely recommended.

The hot-shoe adaptor is the AS-1. The F2 has to be one of the all time great cameras of the film era, before the advent of autofocus of course. Nice video!

Great review of one of my favorite cameras. You're right, it's a heavy sucker. But compared to a Canon F-1 with AE finder and my FD 35mm f/2 concave lens, it's light as a feather.

purchased my first Nikon (Nikkormat) in 1972. Used that camera until the Digital Age. I still have it and it works like new. One CLA. Sinse I have purchased an F2 and just to have it, an F. Love all of them. F2 is my favorite.

Can’t beat Nikon Pro bodies in general. Loads of them still running strong. I bought a used F3 hp in early 90s and it still runs like a top.

Love it. I have 2. Sadly the shutter just died on one. I eventually moved to the smaller fm 2's & such.

Thank you for a great review of a beautiful camera! I often take out mine just to marvel at the level of manufacturing from Nikon in the 70-ies! Sometimes I also load a roll of film, but truth be told I’ve been spoilt the quality, size and fun from my Olympus m4/3 (I just love the format and rendering from those sensors!) cameras and lenses so I mostly bring them instead of bigger cameras like the Nikon F2! Cheers!

Sorry that you forgot to mention the autamatic aperture control unit which were available as AS-1, AS-11 and AS-12. I have got one and will tell you my experiences on it.

I live in Oklahoma City and I have been to Lake Overholser and have taken pictures of the dam. Boy was I surprised to see that picture that you took.

Any tips on using center weighed metering ? When I use my F2AS out on a bright day, I often get highlights that are over exposed (washed out is the term?).

It seems I should be under exposing even though meter shows “o”, but how can I determine how much to under expose ?

What if I meter instead on the green grass as if metering to mid tone grey card? Would this be best?

I think that the Nikon F2 are the best SLR Camera Nikon ever have made, but the best ever 35mm SLR Camera are the Canon New F-1 😊
