No, it's ok not to finish books, and you shouldn't care about every single word, this is a recipe for making reading harder

i agree with all of them except not completely number two. Yes - commit, but if you find out the book isn't for you for whatever reason, then get a different one after you truly gave first a chance.

#1 is fine and I don't want to mean but literally every other rule on this is the exact opposite of what you want to do for the best success

It better be an important book to implement these rules.

Worst advice ever, any real reader would now this advice is just bad.

First of all, you shouldn't force yourself to finish books. There are loads of bad books, forcing yourself to read them just stupid.

Second you shouldn't care about understanding every single detail. Understanding the geography of where the book takes place does not enhance that much the reading experience, at least for most books (there might be some exceptions). And it's incredibly time consuming makes the reading a lot more complicated.

Also the meaning of word can be understood by context a lot of the times you don't need the certainty of knowing every word. Sometimes understanding concepts is enough. Although there are times you will have to look for words.

It's nice to underline books, but it does make the activity more complex. I would probably mainly concentrate on marking in pencil important things and things you like. You shouldn't force yourself to take something out of every chapter though. It's fine to have chapters with nothing underlined. It's even ok to not underline a book at all.

I would suggest this:
1. Don't waste your time on boring books. Some good books will be boring to you and that is fine. Maybe someday you will like to try reading them again and enjoy them or maybe you will never like them.
There is a second part to this rule though. You should try to approach difficult books, but you should enjoy the difficulty.

2. Underlining a book is a 100 percent optional.

3. You should develop a sense of when you are missing something important to try to understand the book. And in those moments stop and try to understand why you are confused. It's fine to not understand words if you get the concept. What you should aim for is developing that sense of when is important and when it's fine to continue reading.
