A lesser known video from Britsh band Madness which features an appearance by Ian Dury.

Lyrics

Gentlemen and assassins and ladies of the night
I call upon you this evening in the hope of shedding some light
I can't go into detail or finger unfounded fools
But there are some here amongst us that are not playing to the rules

I've rounded up the lowlife and local CID
Offered a free massage or else the third degree
There is no simple solution in this life we lead
So make things easy for yourself to the baronage concede

We want Freddie for our leader Freddie is a man of Class
We want Freddie for our leader all stand and raise your champagne glass

Peace shall not prevail in Purley came the stark warning today
From his hospital bed Drip fed Fred vowed he was here to stay
I'll tell you something for nothing never in all my days
Have I felt so intimidated by the cheap tactics on display
And now approaching the pulpit the Rt Hon Rev Green Hank C Burnette BBC News

We want Freddie for our leader Freddie is a man of Class
We want Freddie for our leader all stand and raise your champagne glass

We are gathered here this evening to pay our due respects
To Drip-Fed Fred who late last night fell out of his prison bed
We know the nonce behind it who slipped the night PD
The word is out now without doubt you will answer to me

Gentlemen and assassins and ladies of the night
I call upon you this evening in the hope of shedding new light
There is a simple solution one called honour amongst thieves
So we'll take pity on your souls and only cap your knees

I'll tell you something for nothing
I'll tell you oh yeha yeha No No oh heya
No I'll tell ya. Hear me out hear me out hear me out

Criminally underrated song from an underrated album. Dark humour and vibe with Mr Drury’s gravelly tone lending itself suberbly to it.

Later Madness videos are generally quite sinister and full of theatrics, brilliant and unique. There was never any other band like them.

Just discovered this song today and I think it's an absolute masterpiece.

I was most sad when it said Mr. Thompson and not Kix. I met Ian Dury when I was working at a venue on his last tour, I tried to use the disabled toilet that was near the manager's office and on trying the door handle heard an almighty "OI!" then 30 seconds later the door opened and it was Ian and I suddenly went semi-mute and all that came out of my mouth was "that was quick" and Ian replied "still the slowest shit I've ever had". God bless him.

Loved this track off the album bitd but never saw the vid until now; ranks alongside their earlier classics. Great to see ID enjoy himself in his later years.

Love the big smile on Mr Dury's face at the end as they carry him off. - You can see he was enjoying himself.😀

More than a tribute: a true eulogy while still alive. That’s class.

At School Ian Dury And The Blockheads had us all singing "hit me with your massive prick". leaving school and starting out in life Madness was my soundtrack.

Ian's last ever video I believe, he was very ill by the time this was done. RIP Ian, a genius, a legend!

Released just three months before Ian passed away, this song only reached number 55 in the UK. I guess Suggs and the band wanted to record a song with Ian Dury (even though they'd known him since the late 1970s) and realised that time was running out for him. The end result is a solid tribute to him. Interesting to see Phil Jupitus mentioned in the video credits too.

There was an acknowledged chain including Madness, Ian Dury, The Kinks, Max Wall....with intercollaboration between several of them....together this canon encapusulted the vrey best of London Working-class musical culture.
Ian was a grand old man in this tradition and is much missed...Madness, now, are honourable successors especially as their voices have aged and matured...I hope thei line cotinues...who are the most probable candidates for consideration?

This song is proof that Mr. Dury has the coolest voice of any vocalist ever.
