How to solve simultaneous equations using the elimination method

On this episode, hackingmaths shows you how to solve two linear equations simultaneously by using the elimination method.

4x + 3y = 15 and 3x - 2y = 7

and then

3x + 2y = 5 and 5x + 7y = 1

i need to ask, at the adding part, are you strictly suppose to add? When i subtracted i used the second equation to double check and it was correct but the first was wrong. when i added, i used the first to double check and it was correct but the second was wrong, please help
