I saw this video when you posted it a few years ago and it improved my alternate picking 10 fold. I had been struggling with playing clean alternate picked lines for years prior to seeing this video. Thanks for that!

Troy Grady talks about something similar with his sweeping technique he calls them "rest strokes" I believe. I think you are first with planting. You are one of the best on YouTube, Rick. You inspire so many people. Thank you!

Hi Rick, been playing and teaching for fifty years, first time i.ve heard of planting on one string. It has vastly changed my picking in 2 days! Can't believe the difference, This is a turning point for me. Thanks, you nailed it!

he has the best picking hand in the business.

My classical guitar teacher taught me the same thing. He helped me become aware of the amount of force I used on my picking hand and fretting hand. When you use only the minimal amount required, you can move faster and play for longer periods of time.

Great tip! You're a monster, Rick. I have been a fan of your playing for a number of years now and you never fail to inspire.

Hey Rick, thanks for the lesson. Allen Van Wert has a couple older videos about this technique. One is called "Is there a shortcut to playing fast?!" on JamPlay's YouTube channel.

I've been working on this exact thing the past few months and I've made so much progress, my picking and cordination has never felt better, feeling so connected to the guitar. There is a video by Rez Abassi on mymusicmasterclass where he touches on this for a second. Good work Rick, very improtant and yes! not talked about enough!

Your "planting" technique instantly transformed my picking. It is so easy to do and incredibly effective. Thanks!

In college I studied classical guitar with a teacher who was a Berkeley graduate. His name was William Yelverton. He taught me to “prepare before you pick“. That is the exact technique Rick is teaching here. It’s important to add something to this. And that is even though you “prepare before you pick“ you need to pick the string in time.Try this: With the Metronome clicking and a slow tempo practice a piece or a melody by preparing before you pick but picking the string on the beat. It is somewhat counterintuitive and that your fingers will move in between the beat to prepare to pick the string on the beat. But give it a try!

Frank Gambale talked about this way back in the 80s in a video called 'Speed Picking'. The video is about economy picking and he mentions the rest stroke similar to classical guitar like you did. Although his video is mainly just talking about going in the same direction so I love how you took it a step further. Great video!

Thanks, Rick; this is something that I've developed naturally, or without actively practicing & this video has (finally) validated it.

As of now, I merely brush the string with the tip of the pick without much of the movement/travel in between the adjacent strings. I've always thought it felt natural, but watching a number of videos focused on DWPS, I thought that my approach was against the mainstream modern picking technique. Minimum pick travel feels like the way to go!

Hell yeah! My classical instructor taught me this technique as well.
Thanks for refreshing our memory this is critical to learn and understand for major advancement....!!!

Rick, I'm glad to see someone else has thought of this, too. I also have my classical guitar degree and have started doing this very thing. The idea for me when I started doing it was that the less wasted motion I had, and the quicker I could get the pick to the next string (even before picking the next note on that string), the quicker I could play, hypothetically.

This has been one of the most impacting video on my playing

Whoa! I knew about rest strokes, but not as applied to alternate inside and outside picking. This has made me so much more aware of the "depth" at which my pick is landing when alternate picking and has helped me greatly...Thanks Rick.

Great video, thanks. I remember Paul Gilbert talking about this, but he uses it because of the staccato sound, he never mentioned using it to make the picking hand movements smaller. I'm definitely going to try this.
