Historically, after this battle was won by the Bulgars, they settled around the Danube River, which was possible due to the Byzantines fighting the Arabs in the Mediterranean and North Africa.

But, had this failed, the Bulgars may have never created their own state, or it could have been somewhere else. The Byzantines could have won, as they outnumbered the Bulgars 2 to 1, so had this happened, Bulgaria wouldn’t be formed in the Balkans.

I'd say Asparuh would join Kuber and create a Bulgarian state in Pannonia. And I'd assume they'd be more like Hungary today because the Slavs weren't numerous in Pannonia. I'd imagine the lands of modern Bulgaria being divided, the seven slavic tribes in Moesia and Dobruja, and Greeks in Thrace.

Might of eventually been a new Slavic state where Bulgaria is today. As the first Bulgarian state was founded when the Bulgars and the Slavs combined to fight against the Byzantines and later on the bulgars would more or less assimilate into the greater Slavic population in the country

If the Bulgars are defeated, would this result in the survival of the Eastern Romans? The Romans had to deal with the Caliphate in Anatolia and the Bulgars in the Balkans. With a stable border on the Danube, they could have capitalised more on the weakening of central Abbasid authority in the 800s if they had not needed to deal with an extremely volatile second front till 1018 with the collapse of the First Bulgarian Empire. Or perhaps another nomadic tribe like the Hungarians or later on the Cumans have done a similar thing to the Bulgarians in our timeline.

The byzantines wouldn’t be as weakened from fighting the bulgars and the Turks would have a harder time conquering them. However they would still succeed due to numerical superiority.

Without the Thracians mixing with us nor the Slavs we might see a slightly bigger future “Serbia” and maybe a Thracian state. The city of Plovdiv and the south including Macedonia would likely be majority Greek if the ottomans don’t control the area.

Hungary would likely have a better grip over Transylvania with all the Russian-Turkish and Byzantine wars happening on the other side of the Carpathians serving as a buffer between the rest of Europe and the more chaotic area.

In a “realistic 2024” scenario I’m betting that the western parts where even the capital Sofia lies would be “Serbian”. With a border in the area diving Serbia and Greece. In the southeast/East it’s possible the Thracians survive and have a state or are assimilated by turkey which could even stretch up to Moldova/Besarabia. I’m betting tho that turkeys influence in the Balkans would be small and that Romania would be division between Hungary in Transylvania and Russian speaking people in the plains in the east. Perhaps a remnant of the mongols during their invasion might have survived on the other side of the carpathians and we have two Mongolias. I’m betting tho that “Russia” or “Ukraine” would have taken over the area all the way to the Danube or beyond.

I’m not very experienced in ancient/medieval history but this is my theory.
