First Time Painting Gloomhaven Minis! (WARNING: AWFUL PAINTS)

We here at Shelfside have been recently consumed by Issac Childres's monolith of a dungeon crawler: Gloomhaven, the current number one tabletop game on Board Game Geek. Since the beautiful miniatures that come with the game are so essential to the Euro-styled card-based combat, Daniel finally decided to sit down and record his very first time painting any sort of miniature. Spoiler alert: the paints suck. Well, at least our once unpainted minis are now no longer sore on the eyes when we whip out this behemoth of a board game.

The game comes with tons of unlockable classes and content, and for the sake of this video we're not spoiling any of the non-starting classes. We paint the Mindthief, Cragheart, Tinkerer, Scoundrel, and Spellweaver (inspiration links below, Daniel found them off reddit) in the challenge to overcome the disgustingness of Ashton's childhood miniature paints. Our campaign is still under way, and more Gloomhaven content is sure to come!

The important thing is that you persevered....and yes I did learn something, don't use ancient paints :-)

Definitely don't use ancient paints and try washes next time! It's pretty easy to get a fancy lookin' mini!

If you decide to paint frosthaven starters, I’d be very interested seeing in what can do with a starter paint set!

I dont know, i think Cragheart is pretty good. And they all look way better now than out of the box. Good detailing getting the Scoundrels daggers, but make the 2 browns on her lighter and darker.

Those old Citadel paints (the black lids) are in the style used almost 20 years ago, lol… I remember, when mine dried out years ago I would add water to the pot and stir with a small stick until it was a useable consistency. I then bought the new paints (the rubber lids) maybe 10 years ago, and a lot of them are getting thick, but still useable. Technically, medium is better than water, but whatever.

Obviously you’ve already finished the campaign now, so it’s too late… but seriously, your amateur attempt was a decent base coat, and I bet if you had applied a shade wash over the entire model, then dry brushed the entire thing, I bet it would have come out more like how you pictured in your mind.

The new hotness from Citadel is their Contrast paints, which are essentially thick washes. I haven’t tried them yet, but I have seen some incredible looking paint jobs done very quickly and easily using them - likely I will break down and try them eventually. I want to paint all my board game miniatures, but there are so many, and I spend way too much time painting detail to my personal high standard, which is complete overkill for something that lives in a box most of the time.
