Just one comment: in Antiquity and Early Middle Ages 95% of the territory inhabited by tribes of future Poland (and Germany, but only in Antiquity, then Germans developed substantially as the HRE) was an impenetrable Holocene primeval forest, the likes of which you can now see only in Bialowieza National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is thought that the term "Polanie" comes from "opole" - which was a set of centrally located farmland fields surrounded by fortified (or not) villages. O-pole in old Western Slavic literally means "located around the fields". Because, unlike the open steppes of Rus, proto-Polish tribes had to put a substantial effort into clearing the land for farming (it was also VERY swampy - for example "Gdansk" literally means "swamp"). In fact up to today you can tell a difference between original Slavic villages in Poland and those started by German settlers: early Polish settlements have a layout of a circle (multiple concentric circles) while German settlements have rectangular blocks with parallel and perpendicular streets, very much like modern cities do with rectangular fields.

Even in 1200s, during Mongol invasions Poland was very strongly forested - 85% - and VERY sparsely populated - only 1 million inhabitants (compare to 10 million Germans in the HRE). In fact one of the hypothesis today is that Mongols withdrew after an initial successful campaign not due to the death of the Great Khan, but because they had no way to feed the 10s of thousands of their horses. During the 3rd invasion of Poland Mongols did not lose as much as they were denied supplies hidden in the new stone castles and they literally starved to death - no open plains and grassland to graze the horses like in Kievan Rus. The badly weakened remains of the Mongol army were then mopped up by the combined Hungarian and Polish forces. Well, the point being - Poland was nothing like today: forests and swamps rather than never-ending open fields.
