Life is not fair & I won't get used to it: Telemann, a modest talent, wrote over 800 pieces. Schumann, a genius, died at age 46 and finished only 4 symphonies and 3/4 of a 5th--this piece. I can listen to Schumann--anything by him--over & over again. Simply beautiful & brilliant. Lovely performance, of course. Yes, a very cold audience.

This is just pure Schumann gold, I love every minute of this amazing triptych. It is so extremely original and seems so oddly spontaneous. I love also how he creates these wonderful suspensions over major sevenths and nineths (like Mendelssohn also quite usually does) that sound so wonderfully mellow after moments of highest dramatic intensity. What Schumann was really great at is his capability of putting all the musical machinery to use for a direct translation of his somewhat erratic psychological affects. If he wouldn't have been a man of such thorough humanistic education, such a translation would have probably been impossible, he knew exactly what buttons he had to push at the very perfect timings. His music is somewhat the perfect match of absolute chaos and strict order in an evenly distribution, at every moment and aspect in a piece, and this piece is somewhat like a perfect storm. Although there are many many others.

What an exciting piece of music this is. I wish that I had been there in person! Paavo Jarvi and orchestra are superb.

The camera shake due to the bass vibrations at 6:07 is quite funny.

This is really a symphony. It doesn't need a slow movement....

If Schumann had added a slow movement to this substantial work, it could have become another fine symphony. I've always enjoyed it tremendously, especially the delicate "Scherzo" and the festive "Finale" with its imposing opening chords. Jarvi's spirited conducting and the orchestra's performance make the music blossom.

Such a beautiful work. The Scherzo in particular is exquisite.

My favorite scherzos by Schumann are from his first and fourth symphonies.

This is so different from anything else of Schumann's I've heard. If I didn't know better, I would swear it was by Mendelssohn. A wonderful piece.

Magnífica y original interpretación. Las inflexiones del fraseo y la libertad en el uso del tempo dan como resultado esta lectura incomparable de Schumann

Why didn't Schumann name this piece "symphony without slow movement"?

If this were considered a mini-symphony without a slow movement, it is much better than his 1st and 5rd and on a par with the 2nd and 4th. Scherzo better than syms. 1, 2, 3.
