How to use a sponge to match knockdown texture 2 - Tape joint ceiling repair

In this video I'll be matching a knockdown texture with my knockdown texture sponge. Before the texturing I had already repaired two buckling and cracking tape joints right next to a skylight.
Once the ceiling repair is complete and primed. I'll be spray painting with my airless paint sprayer and back rolling, all of the knockdown textured ceilings in this Satellite Beach, FL home.
In this video clip I'm using a my knockdown texture sponge to apply joint compound to the tape joint repair areas where the knockdown texture needs to blend in with the existing knockdown texture.
After removing the failing paper drywall tape and rescrewing the ceiling drywall seam to a framing member I :
1) Spot primed the area with a spray can of Kilz primer
2) Applied fiberglass mesh drywall tape to the exposed drywall seams
3) First coated repair with a 5 minute hot mud / setting type compound
4) Second coated the repair with USG All Purpose joint compound (green lid)
5) Next I wet sanded the edges to blend into the existing texture
6) With a my knockdown texture sponge, drywall mud pan and some all purpose joint compound I will apply knockdown texture to the repair first. Then I will feathering / blend the knockdown to into the the existing ceiling texture.
5) Spot prime with Zinsser 123 stain blocking primer
6) Repaint ceilings with favorite brand of latex paint

This is exactly what I need to repair holes in the ceiling where new HVAC ductwork was run. Apparently the person who finished the lower level of our split level some years ago thought it was a good idea to cut into the ductwork for the floor above. I thought I would repair the holes and hire out the texture work but now I think I can handle it myself!

Good videos, Paul. Do you mix the joint compound with any water, or use it directly out of the bucket? Thanks.

I've got a skylight surround texture to repair - steam from the pressure cooker got up there and one section is cracked and crumbling now. Once I remove the damaged section, what sort of compound should I use? We're in Canada so I'm not sure we necessarily have the same brands but should be close enough...?

We had someone come in to do a different section of it last year and she used some sort of quick set and a trowel rather than a sponge, so I'll have to experiment... but I can't ask because the repair failed and she refused to come back despite $750 for 4 hours of work LOL

Hi Paul, love your videos! Question: my texture is really tight (small, close, almost no space ). How do I replicate it?

My ceiling has what appears to be a light knockdown texture, not big areas of knocked down spots. Any advice on matching a lighter knockdown?

Hi Paul!
So, I am about to try this technique and I went and got the items but I sadly couldn't find a sea sponge, only cellulose rectangle sponge (without rough side)
If I put some bigger holes in it, would it give the same results?
Thanks!!

I don’t see how this Sponge can match knockdown that was sprayed on with a hopper? The sponge leaves a different base then the sprayed mud so it won’t match perfect like I want my jobs to be but if it’s stomp knockdown it will work fine but so will a stomp brush

wont match looks very in my personal opinion and experience the texture never ever ...will match dosent matter who do the texture never will looks the same not even close always after paint you will see that wont match ....many reasons because the existing texture paint have already many coats of paint and primer
