The Unix-like family is by far the largest family of operating systems, including hundreds of distinct OSes being developed throughout its over 50-year history, and influencing basically every OS since the 80s. In this video, I explain the history and classification of Unix-like OSes.

Chapters:
00:00 - Origins and early history
02:31 - The rise of side branches, increasing popularity and AT&T divestiture
03:58 - Standardization efforts and the Unix wars
06:11 - The rise of free/open source Unix-like systems
09:12 - Classification of Unix-like OSes
14:42 - Tenets of the Unix philosophy and common Unix architectural features
17:22 - Influence on other families
18:15 - Conclusions

The clearest and most accurate YouTube video on Unix history I've seen so far.

The thing about trying to cover Unix is that one could easily get swallowed up in all the incredible various sub stories, that by now (in some cases) have taken on the complexion of hoary legend and mythology.

Unix also has a lot of spin-off effect vis-a-vis important related software that sprung up in Unix environs.

Could keep a modest sized history department busy trying to adequately chronicle it all.

Nice history and best attempt at the confusingly-twisted interconnectedness of Unixes.

There's at least one, but I believe only one linux-based OS from China that paid the $100 000 fee to be certified a Unix operating system. It's the only linux-based Unix that I know of.
