So Far Away From Today (original song) | demo 3, piano version

This is my third and final version.
After a few days of being removed from these tracks, I think this is my least favourite of the three. Won’t get into why, but I prefer the slower flow and guitar/piano version, demo 2 being my favourite. I did some Elliott Smith type right-left delay panning on the vocals in that track, and if I elevate the gain of the vocals in that version, it’s the best one (for me).

You've had the fortune or misfortune of watching me develop a song in real time over the last few days (ie, if you've followed the previous takes). I didn't like, or wasn’t sure about the guitar sound I was getting through my mic in the first versions, nor the guitar fills, but I did like the piano. So for this version I simplified all of it down to a single piano track, and one main vocal track (plus some harmonies). I also added some harmonica. I always liked the combo of piano and harmonica. I increased the tempo a bit (bringing it under 4 minutes), and I changed the key from D to E-flat to better meet my very limited vocal range. I also didn't do any weird panning or effects on the vocals, so this version is about as close to if I were playing it live at a piano bar. I won't be making a habit of posting multiple demo takes of original songs. Just thought it would be of interest to the songwriters out there who find this.

I've written a new song, which I plan to upload in a day or so. Another piano ballad. Stay tuned.

Notes in description. This is the third and last version, and after sometime listening to all three, I think this is the weakest version of the three. Still rough cut, but fun to see how a song evolves or devolves over a few versions. I won’t be posting multiple takes of songs, like this. Just got a bit carried away with this one and thought fellow songwriters might find the process interesting. I always love to hear various demo versions from songwriters, especially the initial, raw, unpolished versions.

Just lovely, Peter. I know you feel this is the weakest version, but I think it’s my favourite. 😄 A more intimate and vulnerable piano arrangement, with that beautifully stark harmonica. You bumped the key up a semitone and I can hear the difference in your vocals (I'm always surprised with the change a mere semitone can make). Terrific performance! By the way, I’m listening alongside my mother this morning (visiting my folks this weekend), and she’s thoroughly enjoying your music. She’s quite stubborn about her hearing aids and often leaves them out, but she made a point of putting them in for your songs. Trust me—that’s high praise! 😀

Version 1, version 2, final version... It doesn't matter to me. I love all three, because in each of them dwells the spark of making music, the yearning to keep dreaming, the persistence to never stop walking the path of creativity.
