The American Occupation of Iran 1941-1978

American control of Iran began in 1941 when the United States provided military aid to allow the British to invade Iran to seize its oil. Britain could no longer pay Iran royalties on oil production, so decided to steal it. The British joined the Soviets to invade and partition Iran, in the same manner the Germans had joined the Soviets to partition Poland in 1939. The United States pretended it was neutral in this conquest, but massive American military aid made this invasion possible.

During World War II, Iran was occupied by some 30,000 American troops. Americans filled key positions in Iran’s government, so the nation functioned as a colony of the American empire. After the war ended, most American troops were withdrawn, but thousands of soldiers and civilians remained to advise the Iranian government, military, and police to support the dictator they had installed.

I got my driver's license around the time of the Hunger Strikes in British Occupied Ireland and as a result have never once purchased gas from a British Petroleum or Royal Dutch Shell gas station.

Just found your channel today, great work. I remember a few years ago I stumbled on a documentary about the USA left 15, 000 to 30, 000 POWs that were capture by germany in ww2 and than put in gulags after the war by the russians. And some manage to escape through iran and a bunch a agencies knew about this and covered it up. I cant find the documentary anymore or much info on the subject. It would make a good video.

A good book to read about the coup in 1953, is Stephen Kinzer's book, "All the Shah's Men".

I generally think American/British governments were not that instrumental in the 1953 overthrow of elected Prime Minister Mosaddegh, not for lack of trying, but they have every incentive to paint themselves as powerful as possible and none in the other direction. But the support of the shah's regime, especially with with weapons in the following years, was massive.. I believe Iran under than shah received more weapons from the u.s (used on it's own citizens) than any other country in its time.

The 1979 Iranian Revolution was the product of decades of authoritarian rule propped up by the u.s. as a cold war client state.

The 2nd-term Reagan scandal known as 'Iran-Contra' only makes sense because Iran in the 80's was fighting a decade long war against Iraq and their American weapon systems were in desperate need of replacement parts. But all the defense contractor lobbying & money in the world couldn't get congress to approve weapon sales to Iran after the hostage crisis. Saddam Hussain had started the war, unprovoked, to take Iran's Oil Fields that sit just over the border from Basra.

Good Vid, only question is that really a Democratic elected government in Iran that replaced the regime? Not what we are seeing with the current situation in Iran, given the oppression of opposition. Is that true in 1980 for a period that all could join in the process after the fall of the Shah?
