Digging a Pond | Permaculture Principle 1: Observe and Interact

After 4 years on this land and observing the cycles of nature, it's become clear that there's an ideal pond location in the forest that would create more resilience on the homestead and add important wildlife habitat.
Welcome to our self reliant homestead! Join us, Shawn and Dervla, as we create a resilient, abundant and sustainable ecosystem that feeds our families from the land in Ontario Canada. Using permaculture as our guide, we strive to become independent in water, food, energy and shelter, focused on beauty in form and efficiency in function.
Our Self Reliance is a life of compromise between my two daughters and my wife's preference for culture, comfort and formality, and I, with my love of chaotic and beautiful but challenging and often uncomfortable wilderness living. The resulting homesteads are an eclectic blend of modern with traditional, whimsical with practical, formal with informal, civilized with rustic.
Over the last five years, my wife and I designed and built our dream homesteads from scratch with very little outside help; from undeveloped, declining forest to a comfortable home and cabin with a prolific edible landscape for people and wildlife equally. For many years, we have strived to lessen our burden on others by taking full responsibility for the health and welfare of our immediate family while building a strong community around us, both online and offline. Now that the infrastructure is in place here, we will be spending more time working cooperatively with community members, including extended family, to collectively become more resilient while living a deeply satisfying and meaningful life. Thank you for being part of that!

I was sad when you had to sell the old cabin right after you dug that nice big pond! This cabin is so much better and more secure . Hopefully this fall or winter you can host a retreat for the guys again I know one young guy that needs cheering up and would love to get away for a few days(Joe).

Good day to you Shawn, over the last 7 years I have followed your channel and I find it very inspiring by a one. Man's efforts to make it alone in the wild. As I've said you before, I first discovered your channel when I had leg damage. I had to give up work for a while and also when I was injured at work being attacked by a patient and ended up with a broken back myself. The injuries repaired but it left me affected by the incident physically and mentally. That was 6 years ago. Or through this time I have dropped in and out of viewing your channels and I found it a great conference knowing that there are people out there with genuine care and the will to survive whatever matters and whatever lies before them. Over the last few years now with a war raging in Ukraine with Russia and in the middle East, It does show that people need to communicate talk things over. Otherwise we're all going to end up in a worse state or not here at all. But diversification seems to help to influence and guide people along the way. The world needs to get back to its roots because at the moment the world is a very selfish greedy and in some cases very dangerous and harmful too. Its own people let alone its neighbours. You live a life that many would like for themselves. I for one live in England UK. Own the countryside very much like yourself but the age for me 70 is now a dream. Not a reality but I do take great comfort watching your videos. Seeing how you work. Are you overcome problems? How you feed yourself and the great knowledge of what you know I find inspiring. That's a man that has lost his business. Who could have sat down?, I made the comment. That's me done. You didn't. It was the start of a great adventure and I appreciate the adventure that you share with all of us. As I say, I've looked in many a time over the last 7 years. I think I'm back on my feet. My back has repaired and today I'm going to go on my motorbike to feel free, there's not much freedom in cities. It's only when you get it on the main road and you feel the wind on your face and you just ride. That is my freedom again. I diversify what I'm saying is I enjoy your videos, your projects, your way of life. And thank you for letting this in to look at you and your family. Keep making the videos it works. It works for me. Stay Safe my friend. See you on the next video, kind regards, Graham 🇬🇧👍

You can have run off water and also under ground water in close proximity. If you can easily find the under ground you have the best place to dig your pond and much better water and better supply
