I think when Bob Marley wrote this on the airplane coming back from a trip from Brazil he was really flowing in an open consciousness with God. The divine intelligence in this song is amazing! The lyrics often show it wrong, it is not 'can you be loved and be loved'. It is 'can you be LOVE and be loved'. Big difference. God is the progenitor and author of love and He freely gives and streams this love outward. The question can you be love (meaning God) and then be loved (meaning love returned) means can humanity receiving God's love then chose to take that love and in return love him back. Do we magnify God or the world in our hearts? We see this same dynamic play out in human relationships, and the song crosses over in this way too, like when we love someone very loveable but they cannot or will not love us in return. Then Bob throws in some points how 'the man' or dark forces try to stop us from being and expressing our love in return because elements in this fallen world chain us. He tells them to get lost. Toward the end when he says 'say something', creation came from sound and we need to declare our love if we are to love back. Don't we all love it when someone tells us they love us. Bob Marley was a very spiritual man and sings about God in beautiful ways, he really gets it. The lyrics of this song are a masterpiece! This song is asking if we are willing to return the love that the author of love has given to us and declare it. Each soul has free will to decide this. God Speed.
