Ukraine War: Zelenskyy vows to hold Bakhmut as Russians close in

As China's foreign minister Qin Gang said his country must advance its relations with Russia as the world becomes more turbulent, the focus of the conflict has turned to Bakhmut.

The eastern Ukrainian city has become a symbol for both warring parties. For Russia, it's a signal to its flagging army that after months of setbacks, it can actually mount an offensive and for the Ukrainians it's a golden example of resistance and spirit in the face of adversity.

Truth is Bakhmut is operationally encircled, the only road out is under Russian fire control and withdrawal would mean very heavy losses. In other words, they waited too long.
