Matches, pivotal to human civilization, were invented in 1826 by John Walker, an English chemist. Initially, friction matches, which sparked flames were unpredictable. Consequently, in 1830, Charles Sauria, a French chemist, invented phosphorus-based matches, improving safety. However, they unknowingly caused 'phossy jaw' to factory workers. The safety match, resolving the issue, was introduced by Gustaf Erik Pasch in 1844. Today, matches are vital for various uses, marking an impactful journey of scientific innovations.
