The wizard of oz hated anything safe 😭😭

The Wizard Of Oz movie was one giant experiment proving the necessity of safety regulations.

And because the green paint on the wicked witch of the west was copper based, when she “melted” in a cloud of fire at the end of the movie, her skin actually got severely burned

The Wizard of Oz is such a groundbreaking movie, but it’s so sad because so many dark things happened on that set

You didn’t even mention the fact that it also set her on fire. The paint was highly flammable and they were using fire practical effects for every time she teleported and at one point she came down from the elevator and she had been covered in flames.

Between this, the asbestos snow, and EVERYTHING ELSE. That happened on the set of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ it’s honestly surprising that some of the actors/actresses died because of other things

More like the Wizard of OSHA Violations... that production was nuts!

Some of my favorite things put into one! Art, fun history, radioactivity and toxic stuff, and nerdiness! Also pretty colors :> Your videos are so fun to watch!

Fun fact: Dorothy's shoes are red for the same reason the witch had green skin. Gotta show off that technicolor. The original Ruby slippers were Silver slippers

Not only that, Margaret got horrible burns from the pyrotechnics for her broom. And then when she was on Sesame Street it scared viewers too much they banned the episode. I feel so bad for her.

Margaret Hamilton was on Mister Rogers. She explained she was an actor, that it was make believe, put in the costume and visited Make Believe. Very lovely way to help kids understand actors are not their characters. She was such a nice person in real life.

The wizard of oz is just a testament to how durable the human body is

I heard that when they were filming the first Wizard of Oz in color something when wrong. When the witch disappears into flames, the trapdoor failed to open. She suffered horrible burns and they couldn't remove the makeup without. They had to try their best to treat her burns while being careful not to cause the makeup to go into her wounds. Cause like you said her makeup was copper based. Also the entire cast could have died in different ways. The witch wasn't the only one with deadly makeup, the Tin Man had led based makeup on

They also used asbestos for the snow scene, which had to be filmed multiple times, thus poisoning all actors involved in the scene with asbestos poisoning

That wasn’t even the worst part. The most memorable safety hazard for me was the „snow”. Guess what they used to mimic it? *_Asbestos._*

Also, Buddy Ebsen, dad of Beverly Hillbillies show ( + lots of other movies) was the original Tin Man. Had to be replaced as very sick! was poisoned from the silver colored/ lead poisoning paint. (margaret Hamilton- wicked witch, was in Many movies as well. (she also was in danger from the fire of her broom when she was lowered into the floor "I'm melting! Oh, what a world!" poor Margaret!
