Finally happened! SpaceX Booster 9's 33 Raptor engines FIRING with New Water Deluge system!
Wow wow, really pushing the envelope here!
Congrats to SpaceX for this awesome test!
This is a big step closer to the next test flight, Go Starship!
Yeah, SpaceX lit all 33 engines for the first firing since the April 20th Integrated Test Flight, while simultaneously testing a new water deluge system on the vehicle’s launchpad.
The company began the process of fueling the rocket early Sunday morning but encountered an issue when chilling the lines that run to the rocket, and a red team was sent back to the pad to perform repairs. After repairs were completed, the red team departed and SpaceX spooled up their fuel tank farm again.
After a couple of hours of chilling the fuel lines, filling of the liquid oxygen and liquid methane tanks aboard Booster 9 began at T-Minus 67 minutes. The liquid oxygen tank was fully filled with the liquid methane only partially with what was required for the test.
This is view of Booster 9’s 33 Raptor engines, so clean!
After a smooth countdown, Booster 9 lit all 33 Raptor engines. however, 4 shut down early during the 2.74-second duration test. The test was intended to last 5 seconds.’
Regardless, 29 out of 33 isn't bad, and both Booster 9 and the orbital launch mount emerged from the test in one piece.
"A big congrats to the Starship team for getting through today's test," SpaceX's John Insprucker said during today's webcast. "That moves us another step closer to our next flight test."
As the engines fired, water from the deluge system sprayed upward from underneath Starship’s launch mount.
The new water deluge system seemed to work as intended, albeit with a very short firing of the engines. Instead of a giant dust cloud that is usually formed after a static fire test, this test created a steam cloud that dissipated fairly quickly following the test.

To be resolved, thank you.

It is almost more than a human mind can comprehend. The power of firing all those engines! And this is coming from someone who saw the first moon shot, and all the subsequent Apollo missions.

I believe if I was Mr. Musk, I would be asking some serous questions on the fail engines'!!! Also, (as a retired engineer) I believe I would keep testing all 33 engines till I had a perfect fire and the run the operational test time. (at least twice)

Elon has a growing rocket garden, as he develops new and better boosters and Starships.
He should permanently mount a booster next to a Supercharger station in Vegas as an attraction, so more people can see the biggest rocket the world has ever created up close and appreciate it's scale.
Mount a Starship atop the booster, remove all the fuel tanks and put an elevator to a 5-level bar at the very top.
Creating public enthusiasm for SpaceX's mission can help to persuade regulators to be more lenient.

Fantastic news, thanks enjoyed watching.👍👍👍

It seems to me that the OLM should be twice as tall as it currently is. Blow back pressure might be the cause of the failures of some engines.

The reliability of the raptor engine is a serios concern. Seems like 10%+ failure in just a few seconds; not just this latest test but a recurrent pattern.

Great video! Are you doing your own voice over now? Either that or your new robot voice is awesome! Haha I remember you saying you were waiting until you had confidence: you did an amazing job!! Surprising you ever doubted yourself! You're one of the top space X creators now!

But if do slow mo from the recent test fire..even with the new style deluge system..looks like there were still bits of "things" go with the blast..

I doubt Elon's watching this, but it occurred to me, having designed a number of multi-nodal vibration mechanical systems, we had to design out reinforcement of any harmonic resonance. We did so primarily by employing primes, and not merely any prime, but only those nowhere close in ratios to any 1st, 2nd, etc., through 5th order harmonics. We essentially tested all harmonics to achieve a 99% reduction. The placement of vibrational sources were sometimes a bit weird, but it worked.

Visual inspection of those 33 Raptor engines reveals there exist several harmonics worth of reduction.

It didn't even scratch the new paint, it worked perfectly!

well at least the site will be spotless for inspection! all that water vapour should have cleaned site like a new pin.

Delay delay, cuts & more cuts, this is insanity. At this rate by time we get to the Moon & Mars they will already be inhabited by the Chinese, & it would be naive to think they won't prevent any further exploration by anyone else.

ELON, ELON, ELON! May SpaceX live long!

I bet spacex knew how much the original launch mount had to be excavated in order to install the planned water deluge systems. I wonder if they pumped water through the old fire suppression system? Hopefully somebody has some good footage.

Wow, the space x people are the brightest minds solving the problems one by one. Loving it 💯👍🐸💚

There's a balance between how many engines to get thrust versus total complexity in a heavy launch vehicle. And I'm pretty sure that anything in double-digits isn't it. Even if you can get it to work, it's ultimately not as economic as something with a smaller number of engines.

Not bad for engines that existed only as concepts, First Article tested less than 90 days ago in May, and now, a full array of 33😮

Despite people's us politics I hope we can minimize any cuts to NASA and space procurement. Its a national good, and this is a race. I hope our representatives in both chambers of congress remember that.

That test footage looked awesome, loved the plumage!

Before the last launch, I thought, "Wait. This has twice the thrust of a Saturn 5, and you're launching from THAT?" Scott Manly I am not.

Its a good idea to change out the four that quit. That being, they really need to figure out why these things are shutting down.
