The term "white matter" of the brain refers to the areas of the central nervous system that consist largely of myelinated nerve fibers, giving it a white appearance. The word "matter" in this context is not derived from the Latin word "mater" (which means "mother"). Instead, it comes from the Latin "materia, " which means "material" or "substance." So, "white matter" is literally referring to the "white substance" or "white material" of the brain.
