In this series we're exploring how you can make chords on the guitar yourselves. From a complete beginner to a player who can freely make, alter, break down and analyze chords. I'll take you through the steps you need to learn to master these techniques and make them your own. This will greatly benefit your playing and overall knowledge of the instrument and music theory in general.

Never knew the theory was going to be this exciting :-) And finally I understand the song Allelujah "major fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift" ....

I've been learning piano, guitar, and music theory on and off for years, from multiple different sources. Never ONCE has ANY of them explained this, and it's SO helpful. So thank you so much Paul! You are a fantastic teacher and I really appreciate these videos!!

4th & 5th intervals are 'perfect', cos they're complete ( _perfectus_ in Latin). All the other intervals have a minor and major variant. Inverted, each minor interval becomes a major one. So, e.g., a minor 3rd (C->Eb) inverted becomes a major 6th (Eb->C); and a major 2nd (C->D) inverted becomes a minor 7th (C->D). 4ths & 5ths are neither major nor minor but complete in themselves. A perfect 4th (C->F) inverted becomes a perfect 5th (F->C) & vice versa.
As they are neither major nor minor, lowering or raising them a semitone (fret) doesn't change them from major to minor or v. versa, but diminishes or augments them, e.g., the tritone aka 'blue' note, is an augmented 4th/diminished 5th). Hence, "diminished" and "augmented" chords: e.g., Cdim (Cº) - C, Eb, Gb (C->Gb is a diminished 5th interval); or Caug (C+) - C E G# (C->G# is an augmented 5th interval).

This series is so perfect. I learned music theory to fill in my gaps when I thought I needed it but hadn’t watched it in this order. Best way to learn and become a guitarist that doesn’t get stuck

the 1 dislike came from the guitar itself because his secrets were exposed on the internet to strangers.

Such a great generous teacher, you literally cannot go wrong with these superb lessons, I defy anyone to listen to Paul and not learn something about music, film making or just how to communicate and win people over by being genuine, knowledgeable and charming, what more can I say, except thanks again!

"If you have a good understanding of what this is about you're on the right track."
Exactly what I needed to hear.
I get it, but there is much to get.

Take your time, ppl.
Enjoy the process.

This is the first time I actually got to appreciate the naming of those intervals. I've been watching music theory videos but this is the one that brought all of the things I learned together. Thanks Paul!
