The 2022 BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe Is An Ideal Middle Ground Between an M3 and 330i

When it comes to the perfect sports sedan, #BMW has always been the king of this segment with the 3-series. However, nearly a decade ago, the company decided to introduce an interesting 4-door coupe called the #4SeriesGranCoupe. It was an instant hit for buyers wanting something more unique versus a 3-series sedan. The #M440iGranCoupe pairs the beloved 3.0L turbo I-6 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to produce near M3 levels of acceleration and represents a near perfect middle ground for enthusiasts trying to decide between a 330i and an M3 sedan.

For those of you who can't decide between a 330i and the M3 sedan, the M440i is the perfect compromise between both and while there was a time where we'd recommend the new electric i4 M50, with the new tax credits in effect, the M440i Gran Coupe now seems to make more sense as long as you're okay with giving up some straight line acceleration and using the older BMW iDrive 7 in the interior. We expect this car to get the new infotainment system for 2023 or 2024.

I was invited to BMW event for the weekend and had a chance to drive - pretty much every modern BMW they have on offer for prolonged time. Anyway I really liked M4 expecting a lot and it did deliver. BUT - M440i really impressed me. While M3 was very powerful - it felt like driving a PlayStation. YOu can feel how much effort BMW engineers included to smooth out the road feel. But M440 felt more like a "real and realistic car" if it makes sense - it really felt quick and lively - more than M4. It comunicates whats going on much better than M4 and therefore gives you a feeling of connection with the road. So funny enough - thinking I would go for M4 - M440i was my final choice.

Have had my M440i Gran Coupe for about 6 months and I like it even more than I thought I would. I originally ordered one in early October 2021, it arrived in late December without the power seats. That was unacceptable and I said I would wait for them to make another. BMW does offer cooled seats as an option, which mine has as well. In my opinion, it looks much better with the shadowline trim. The chrome just accentuates the large grill, the shadowline helps it to blend in and look aggressive, especially in the darker colors. It is a great daily driver, smooth, quiet, and composed. Put it into Sport Plus and I'm not sure what more you need. The sportback design is why I chose this car and there is plenty of room, especially if you put the back seats down. The only caution I would give is if you expect to regularly drive adults in the back seat. It's fine for kids or adults who are 5' 8" or less. However, taller and/or older adults can have a hard time getting in and out. That is very rare for me, usually just me or me and my wife. Great car, very satisfied with it so far.

For 2024 model year grill will cover the entire front fascia, the hood, roof, and most of the trunk.

I was going to save my judgement about the grill till I see one in person. Saw my first one yesterday no license plate and boy was it real bad.

I would just go with the M340i sedan. This is nice but I prefer the traditional 3 series and the update looks great!

No burps on upshift!!?? My m240 m850 and x3 m40 all sound meaner, pops and crackles with major burps at upshift! Looks sweet!

Um, yes they do. The 3-Series is the vehicle without cooled seats unless you spring for a full M3. I literally was just about to order an M440i GC with cooled seats on it, but changed my mind and went for an X3 M40i instead. The main reason I was going for an M440i GC over and M340i is that it offers cooled seats (and a few other tech options) that the M340i does not, for some strange reason.

I was so lucky to get a model with a performance exhaust, adaptive suspension with every one of the technology packages. It's very fustrating how BMW has so many random builds, making it hard to get everything you want. The car is amazing and the exhaust sounds like a cannon. Definitely worth it but you have to get it fully loaded.
