I've been in theater for fifty years. The night that Jerry Orbach died, I was scheduled to have dinner with two dear friends, a very talented husband-and-wife acting and directing team, with whom I had worked on many occasions. When we got our first round of drinks, I raised my glass and said "Here's to the memory of Jerry Orbach, the quintessential New York actor." The husband -- who was himself a proud and lifelong New Yorker -- teared up, raised his glass, and murmured "Tom, you always know the right thing to say." Whenever I think of Jerry, I think of that moment of communion among three people who loved him, and each other.

I saw Jerry doing this on Broadway years ago... When he hit that opening line... "COME-ON ALONG AND LISTEN TO..." the entire audience went NUTS!!! They at the end of the number, EVERYONE was singing along!

Jerry Orbach was so great in every Broadway musical he appeared in! It is a legend of Broadway that whenever a musical show was failing, the producers would ask Orbach to save the show by appearing in it!
