Recently I stumbled upon your channel, and (instead of doing something more productive) I've seen most of your videos. Good job on explaining the stories behind the stories.

I do have a request, though: Harley Quinn. Maybe in the run-up to _Suicide Squad_? There's so much to unpack: how a throwaway animated henchgirl crossed over into comics and movies, how characters are reinterpreted (and misinterpreted) by different writers and media, or what makes an anti-hero vs. a villain (and how Harley among others transitioned from one to the other), to name a few. Not to mention the themes embodied in the character herself: obsession (e.g. "mad love"), partner abuse (hi, Hank Pym), insanity in comics vs. real life, etc.

In her current series she's moved from Gotham to Brooklyn and reinvented herself as a do-gooder, albeit a criminally insane and casually violent do-gooder. Much as I dislike the New 52 design, it does require Harley to put on fake tan and a wig for her current "normal" job, which is an interesting contrast to previous incarnations who put on clown makeup for the Joker ... and it's a symbol of her warped post-Joker psyche that Dr. Harleen Quninzel is now literally a mask she wears (much like her enemy Batman does).

Anyway, just a thought.

Wow, a no prize? That takes me back to when Marvel had letters pages, it was always fun reading how many people were desperately trying to win them by pointing out "mistakes" they thought they found.

In the early 1990s, there were some issues of the Overstreet guide and I think also some Wizard issues that would list separate prices for direct market vs. newsstand. But these different values applied only to "hot" comics, like 1st appearances of characters, or a popular run of a series.

Thank you for mentioning what I posted about bar codes not existing before the 1970s. At least somebody on YouTube reads the comments under their videos! So a Big No Prize to you, as that seems to be the coming thing! And Genesis... erm... Sise-neg! LOL

Hey Scott, 74SCREWGUN here. you are correct newsstand editions have become more valuable and collectible to a majority comic book collectors. major stores like Midtown comics will generally charge sometimes up to twice as much for a newsstand edition. Like you mentioned this is all due to the fact that you stend editions are considered more rare and high grade. Even third-party professional grading services like CGC and PGX will state on their labels if it is a direct or newsstand edition.

I actually remember reading a comic that had an editorial mentioning what those weird lines were. I was born well after this, but i was an inherited collection.

And once again, paused my film to watch the new Nerdsync video.

There's some interesting stuff on the "no-prize" in Sean Howe's "Marvel: The Untold Story" and the Stan Lee episode of Fat-Man On Batman podcast by Kevin Smith (episode 36 or 38 I think). It is possible to make an episode out of it by talking about continuity errors and the stress that Marvel was under at the time. Although it would still probably be a tie-in video (maybe to another Easter egg hunt? Just thinking out load).

Excellent video Scott, looking forward to the 100th episode!

(It's probably obvious that I wrote this after a three day all nighter session, studying transmedia and comic books. I'm very tired right now)..

The thing about Mayday's biomagnetic field is that it's almost the same thing as you described in your video anyway. It's all electromagnetism. It's just she purposefully controls what you described about electrons.

To the value of bar coded, news stand comics vs direct market comics: it all depends on the condition and when in the phase-out of news stands the comic was printed. The comic will have a rarity about it then. However, after a time, the value would either be negligible or only noticeable if there is a huge rarity, like a special cover only on news stands or some such. The specifics I can't tell you because I stopped collecting comics and just read them now.

It's sort of like the time when Marvel started switching from newsprint to the acid-free paper. Titles like X-Men had both version on the shelves at the same time, with different prices, of course. When you look back at the value of the two, they are about the same, as the "more fragile" newsprint has increased the value about as much as the printed price.

Love your vids but I am really disappointed you don't do physical copies. I'm not a fan of digital. Won't even possess a kindle. Any chance of you looking further into independents?

So NEWSSTAND versus DIRECT MARKET editions do have different values.

You are right, it's harder to find the NEWSSTAND edition (just in general) and harder to find it in good condition.

As a guy who used to run a very successful online comic book store I can tell that the newsstand editions of back issues, especially key issues, will sell faster and for more money than the direct market edition. I used to be able to sell newsstand editions of books that generally wouldn't sell and get at least what they booked for if not more.

In reality newsstands are generally rarer than their direct market counterparts since they would have a lower print run.

I've had this conversation over and over with collectors and dealers, and it always seems that people want to say "no, they are no more rare nor more valuable" but yet want to charge a premium for the newsstand edition.

+NerdSync I have an idea for a future video and that is do Silver age Batman comics and Silver age newspaper Batman comics share continuity? First Barbara Gordon has different introductions in both. Many villains have different costumes in both. Poison ivy is different in both. Sometimes the newspaper contradict the actual comic books, like in the newspaper it says there is only one piece of kryptonite on Earth and it is on display at the Smithsonian, but in the Superman comics kryptonite was abundant. I'm curious to see what you think because many fans don't talk about the newspaper comics. especially the Silver/ Bronze age run for Batman that ran from 1966-1972.

Scott, it's cool to have Spider-manuary, my blog constantly has Superman stuff but he's really interesting to talk about so I understand.
