A visit to the Punakaiki Cavern: Punakaiki, West Coast

While in Punakaiki I visited Punakaiki Cavern a moderately large limestone cave.
You access the cavern about 400 meters past the Pancake Rocks on SH 6 as you drive north towards Westport. Punakaiki Cavern is about 40 meters long and ranges in height inside from 30 centimeters to over 2 meters. A head torch is necessary if you intend to go past the cavern entrance as it is dark inside. I would also wear boots as there are small streams running across the floor that are 5-10 centimeters deep.
