Why Are Snow Crabs Disappearing From Alaska’s Coast?

Показать описание
Crabs from the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska, have mysteriously vanished. It's where the popular Discovery show "Deadliest Catch" is filmed. The crab population plummeted from eight billion in 2018 to one billion today, causing the fishing season to be canceled. The disappearance of crabs also increased the price of crab legs across the U.S. At Benjamin Steakhouse in Manhattan, customers pay $119 for two king crab legs.

As an Alaskan we know what caused our crabs to disappear. Over fishing and too warm waters. It’s the same problem as our salmon. They’re being caught before they can get to breeding grounds so their population decreases

Could be over fishing as well combined with one of the things they suggested causing a sharp decline in their numbers. Given the same happened with passenger pigeons. to where they were over hunted, along with habitat loss caused them to go extinct as a result.

This happened in the 80’s and fishing was off limits for years and obviously retuned stronger than ever. Give the crabs a break and the same thing will happen.

I like how crabs may possibly be extinct and inside edition just shows a reporter eating a crab leg like wasn’t that the problem in the first place

It's absolutely discustingly piggish how the mukbangers frequently post videos of themselves jamming hoardes of crab legs dipped in alfredo sauce and what not down their throats. I strongly believe its part of the problem with over fishing

I believe overfishing is the factor to the crab’s disappearance.

It's because of the all you can eat crab buffets in South Florida. I don't know why they're trying to OBSCURE the fact that they over Harvest these crabs.

I'm gonna buy a package of oreo's, eat an entire row everyday and then be shocked and confused when after a few days all the oreo's have mysteriously disappeared. This is the logic on display here!

“Focused on catching other kinds of sea life”. Crabs aren’t the only thing affected by overfishing.

It's just a matter of time before "All you can eat" seafood establishments will become a distant memory.

I think the Chinese caught them all. I’ve been hearing about their fishing boats all over the world, even off our coast. They have a huge population to feed.

If I had to take a guess, I'd attribute it to the wastewater coming out of the Fukushima nuclear power plant due to the damage done by the tsunami of 2011. It has been leaking into the Pacific Ocean ever since.

They migrate elsewhere.
Something going on with tectonic plates.
If animals left in hurry, something about to go down.
