The Church’s most fundamental principle in the celebration of Mass is that of unity. She has no greater interest than to foster unity when remembering the great sacrifice of Christ for love of us. Our harmony with one another sacramentalizes our unity with him. Catholics express this unity by participating in the common texts, postures and gestures.

I almost fell and had to grab the guy beside me the 1st time I tried to genuflect. Even the Priest smiled. Now, I only bow.

The actual wording is found at #160 in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal:
"When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister." It does not say 'slight', nor does it say bowing with reverence'.
