Sonic Unleashed (HD) playthrough ~Longplay~

This is a playthrough of Sonic Unleashed for the Xbox 360. (timestamps below)

Thought I'd put this up as a longplay too given the Unleashed Wii one's became so popular.

In this playthrough I've inserted runs of the action stages played on a completed save file with both Sonic and the Werehog's stats maxed out. This is in the interest of keeping the pace up.

After having replayed both this year, I have to say I much prefer Unwiished to UnHDshed. The latter may have better production value, but it's bogged down by unnecessary filler like having to collect medals to unlock levels and visiting hub worlds.

For me Sonic Unleashed is a case of missed potential. The story hits the perfect tone for Sonic, the presentation is nice (bar the unacceptable performance issues) and the day levels have a great sense of speed, but the Werehog is a horrible idea from conception.

The opening cutscene is just gorgeous. Like goddamn the graphics and the action. Instead of a live action Sonic movie, the new Sonic movie should be like this.

One of the most passion-filled games Sonic Team ever gave us, and we’ll likely never get another one like it again. The hate it got from trying something different practically scared them into avoiding making games like this.

Colors and Generations did the same gameplay style, pretty well I might add. But not to the grand scope of an adventure like Unleashed.

I remember playing the beginning of this game at least 4 times because I was a kid who didn't know how to save progress in games, and even so it was the game I had the most fun with in my childhood, I wish I could go back to that time.

People give this game so much crap for the night time stages, but I really don't have a problem with them. Sega tried something new, and maybe it didn't resonate well with fans, but that's no reason for people to hate the entire game. The daytime stages were exactly what a modern Sonic game needed, and you can't argue, the cutscenes we're GORGEOUS, even on the Wii. It feels like so many games these days would feel so much better if people didn't just hate new concepts for being new. Oh, and one more thing. I miss Jason.

Is it safe to say that Sonic Unleashed has the best story in the series
Edit: After playing Sonic Frontiers multiple times, I now think that game has a better story. Sonic Unleashed is definitely a close second though

Can we just take a second to appreciate how fucking good the opening cinematic is

It opens on a shot of earth with this dreamlike almost ethereal music is the backround as it slowly pans up to reveal this massive Armada helmed by who else but eggman

As he laughs knowing what he's about to do then sonic shows up right infront of some fire, sirens blaring in the backround eggman sends out dozens of robots trying to stop Sonic he easily blazes through all of them but eggman prepared with his own giant mech-suit filled to the brim with all of his strongest weapons sonic realizes he can't take him head on so he dodges eggman's shower of bullets and rockets

Just as he's about to get away eggman unleashes (heh) his grapple arm the fingers sprouting from the barrels of his machine gun sonic looks behind him and through the rocket explosions the giant hand grabs sonic he can't escape so he in a last ditch effort he becomes Super Sonic eggman not fully understanding what he's doing covers sonic with the mechs second hand then sonic blasts the mechs arms clean off

Eggman realizes what's happening and bails his egg-o-matic detaches from the mech suit and crashes through the corridor sonic knows he can easily get eggman right now but he's a showoff and he makes scrap metal out of the surrounding ships finally chasing after eggman easily catching up to him eggman now on his knees begs sonic for mercy but it's an act as he gets Sonic right were he wants him with the press of a button he captures sonic and sucks the energy out of the chaos emeralds turning them grey

He then breaks the earth apart showing us that the ship they are on is just a giant Lazer, Gaia emerges from the broken planet mimicking Sonic's movements eggman is fascinated showing that he doesn't fully know Gaia and their capabilities Gaia's negotiate energy turns sonic into the Were-hog opening the airlock eggman grants sonic a farewell as he in flung back down to earth




Even that doesn't do this scene justice it captures sonic and eggman's personality so well it's gives us a great idea of what this games about and just so much more
