Coca Cola acquired Thums Up, they didn't create a new product. Thumbs Up had been introduced in the Indian market in 1977, at a time when Coca Cola exited it. It was a very popular drink at the time of acquisition (1993) and a strong competitor to Pepsi and Coke.

It's not rip off, it's in the market for last 50 years, unethically acquired by Coca Cola. They even altered the taste so that brand vanishes but Indians are very loyal even after 3 decades of takeover.

Thumbs up was available in India far before either Pepsi or coca cola entered the Indian markets. And it tasted far better before Coca cola took it over. Coke wanted to kill it off, but failed as it tasted far, far better. So they watered it down, made it too sugary, stopped promoting it. But failed despite coke using every trick. And so the brand still continues. 👍

Actually not a ripoff 😅 - Thums Up is a brand of cola. It was introduced in 1977 to offset the withdrawal of The Coca-Cola Company from India. The brand was later bought by Coca-Cola who re-launched it in order to compete against Pepsi to capture the market.(BTW if you wonder - it is indeed google copy paste😂😂)

Before 1990, India was a closed economy and Pepsi/Coca Cola did not exist here. Thums Up is a home grown brand that was coercively acquired by Coca Cola since they didn't want any competition
