GENESIS 27: JACOB'S DECEPTION - THE STOLEN BLESSING
Показать описание
Genesis Chapter 27 Summary:
In his old age, with failing eyesight, Isaac calls his elder son, Esau, desiring to bless him before his death. He asks Esau to hunt and prepare his favorite meal. Overhearing this, Rebekah, favoring her younger son, Jacob, devises a plan for Jacob to receive the blessing instead. She instructs him to bring two goats, which she will prepare as Isaac's beloved dish.
Anticipating Isaac's ability to discern between his sons by touch, Jacob and Rebekah use goat skins to mimic Esau's hairiness. Disguised as Esau, Jacob approaches Isaac and lies about his identity. Isaac is suspicious due to the quick return and the difference in voice, but the tactile deception convinces him. Believing he's blessing Esau, Isaac bestows upon Jacob blessings of prosperity, power, and dominion.
Shortly after, Esau returns and the deception is uncovered. Isaac is deeply distressed, and Esau is heartbroken, realizing his birthright and blessing have been taken by Jacob. Despite his pleas, Isaac states that the blessing is irrevocable. However, Isaac does provide a lesser blessing to Esau, prophesying that he will live by the sword and serve Jacob but will eventually break free from this servitude.
Furious and vengeful, Esau plans to kill Jacob after Isaac's death. Rebekah, learning of this threat, advises Jacob to flee to her brother Laban in Haran until Esau's anger subsides. She also expresses to Isaac her distress over the possibility of Jacob marrying a local Hittite woman, further driving the need for Jacob's departure.
