The successor to the KGB, the FSB is Russia's latest internal security installment, reorganised to continue protecting its civilians and to stomp out any perceived dissent.

Made up mainly of the Border Guard Service, it specialises in military and foreign counterintelligence, counterterrorism, economic state security, and internet monitoring. But how do they operate, why do members call themselves by their early predecessor name the 'chekists', and why are they still significant today?

Last year a policeman wanted to give me a ticket for illegal crossing right on Lubyanka square and me and my friend were like: "where tf did this policeman even come from?" We didn't know that's the FSB building right next.

We started speaking in a foreign language and the policeman was like "ah, nevermind" and let us go.

Best description: It used to be KGB, now it’s FSB. Same friendly services under a different name.

Seems like the FSB could really stand to implement less terrorism with their counter terrorism operations.

What kind of nonsense are you talking about, in Beslan the assault began after the explosion of terrorist bombs and the fire that started. The special forces did not shoot at civilians, but the militants did it, which is why it was necessary to suppress their firing positions from small arms. In this operation, 10 special forces people died, due to the fact that the militants at the school started shooting at children, and the special forces covered them with their bodies. From the tank and the RPO they shot at the militants who were in the premises where there were no people, and they did it at point-blank range when approaching the building.
And during the terrorist attack on Dubrovka, in general, hardly anyone would have survived if they had not used the gas that lulled the suicide bombers with bombs.

9:05 hostages who was not shot by terrorists died because of extreme hurry of operation (hostages were on a werge of death at the time of storm) and lack of coordination betwen paramedics and FSB. Turns out that uncontious hostages was supposed to be put down only on the sides to survive with extremely oppressed breathing due to used gas nature. Almost all of the people who was put down on their backs by paramedics died to suffocation. Paramedics was not given instructions on how to stabilize patients and this led to tragedy, if only they knew what to do this operation would be one of the greatest succeses in history of hostage rescue
9:34 storming of Beslan school was spontanious, spetsnaz forced to act after one of explosive devices inside school detonated and childrens start to run out while terrorist shot in their back. Oficers had to litteraly cower childrens with their own bodies and rush the building. In no war to this day so many spetsnaz Alpha and Vympel members died at the same day (for example- all 3 storming groups commander have been killed in action), if this would happend how autor describes it there will be no such big losses of spetsnaz(there were only 28 terrorists or 32 by other sources yet they managed to kill 10 of most trained and equipped special forces officers of Russia). Tanks was used after there was no more hostages inside to finish off pinned down terrorists in one of the wings of building.
You may dont like that they support "regime" but paint them as ghouls without any regard to other humans lifes is hypocrisy. Any country trains their enforcers to rate hostages life higher than their own, only exeption so far i saw in horrific performance of Uvalde police officers.

During the Chechen Wars it was absolutely awful to be captured by the FSB or OMON. They were feared by the Chechen populace as they would often commit acts of cruelty and brutality unmatched.

В Беслане бойцы "Альфы" выносили детей из школы на своих руках, получая от террористов пули в спины. Эти люди жертвовали собой для спасения жизней детей

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? State security of Ivan the Terrible?
Oprichnina is the first generation of royal army in Russia, as opposed to feudal militias of lords, that were not fit for new conditions of combat in the late 16th century.
Later top-rankings of oprichnina degenerated to the same kind of feudal lords themselves, that's why it is considered as tragedy and failure among many modern historians.

Comparing feudal system to modern states makes as little sense as it can possibly get.

FSB are like Russian Police, but they are aggressive and they arrest the people who committed serious crimes, drug dealers, bombings.etc.
We are scared of them

The FSB is basically the KGB but more corruption, less power, money and influence but ruthless and effective nonetheless.
