I'm in it for the soft clothes. I live in London where the water is "hard" and if you don't use softener it can be like wearing sandpaper. I think that the key is to not use to much

Fabric softener is highly flammable. Worst product for clothing. Fabric sheets clog up dryer filters leaves a residue on your filter screen.

I don't use liquid fabric softener or vinegar. However, i do use baking soda in my wash which does wonders for clothing and also gets rid of the moldy smell that towels sometimes have.
