January EFF Austin Meetup: TxEPC: Lobbying for Location Privacy in Texas
Показать описание
About EEF Austin
EFF-Austin advocates establishment and protection of digital rights and defense of the wealth of digital information, innovation, and technology. We promote the right of all citizens to communicate and share information without unreasonable constraint. We also advocate the fundamental right to explore, tinker, create, and innovate along the frontier of emerging technologies.
The Texas Electronic Privacy Coalition has fought to protect Texans' digital privacy since 2013. Last session they successfully lobbied to protect emails with a search warrant. Now they're back for more.
This session, TxEPC is lobbying to protect your sensitive GPS and cell phone location data under a warrant too. Come learn about StingRays, tower dumps, Texas politics, and how you can get involved on this important issue.
Speakers:
• Kathy Mitchell — Consumers Union
• Scott Henson — Grits for Breakfast
• Matthew Simpson — ACLU of Texas
• Gregory Foster — EFF-Austin
Suggested Reading:
• Cell Tracking — Electronic Frontier Foundation
• It's not just the NSA: local police collect masses of data about us too — TxEPC.org
• APD: Can We Please Buy Some Top-Secret "StingRays"? — Austin Chronicle
We know that there are many challenges that the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other online activist/advocacy organizations are confronting today. We’re no longer on the Electronic Frontier – the frontier is more than settled, and now we’re getting into increasingly complex issues of infrastructure and connectivity, digital “property,” mass online surveillance, police surveillance, etc. Organizations like EFF and EFF-Austin are more important than ever.
