As long as high school dating exists, movie theatres ain’t going nowhere

when I think of going to the movie theater I think of moments like Endgame and Infinity war where the entire theater erupts during certain parts, that kind of emotion and atmosphere cannot be recreated at home

I think movie theaters are going to stay around because not everybody has surroundsound in their house

nah the theater will be back as usual once this virus disappeared. Nothing can beat the experience of watching movie together with hundreds of people in a big hall with some insanely priced fast food lol

Going to a movie theatre is like going to a big family reunion. Tons of people that are interested in what you are interested in, all having a good time watching the movie together, blasting music - it's genuinely a great experience. Unless you get the old BAP BAP that is going around right now, that won't be a good experience. I still think that once the BAP BAP is gone, movie theatres will resume functions like normal and we can all get back to the norm one day. If theatres were to die, on the other hand, I honestly would expect protests or something - we can't let them go.

Lol. Interesting (and entertaining) debate. I think one point you guys missed was how much easier it is to pirate movies that come to streaming first. Unfortunately there will be millions of people who will save the $20 and download the movie from somewhere (in great HD quality), something which is much harder to do for theater releases. For that reason alone, I don't think movie theaters are going anywhere.

That’s a good looking shirt you’ve got there!

I think there’ll always be a need for theaters. But the theatre may return to the level of special occasions. Midnight releases/marathons etc.

Well, Coronavirus cancelling everything for now. Everything will go back to normal in due time. Hopefully soon.

I think they’re definitely going to stick around at least until we have some weird VR movie theatre because the experience of that big of a screen (especially IMAX) is great as well as the surround sound but if you wanted you could already get that but the big screen is something very hard to replicate until a VR type thing.

The main financial motivation for theatrical releases is as follows:
Studios get nearly all of the money from ticket seles and for a famy of 4 assuming $15 a ticket they get $40-60(delending on exact cut) whereas if they do a home release at $20 that same family will only get $20 meaning they loose out on $20-40. As long as math exists movie theaters will too.

Before the Covid-19 hit, 2 big movie theaters in a pretty nice sized city went out of business. This was right after they put an IMAX in their theater.

Not everyone have huge tvs and surround systems at home so no, I don't think movie theaters are going to be dead because, like you said, it's a experience not only the other services they offer but the movie itself you can enjoy it at all of it's glory.

There's a reason I haven't been to a theater in over 4 years, they suck. They're crowded, dirty and have overpriced food and drink. Sure, they have better sound and a bigger screen, but the screen difference isn't much since I sit in the middle of the theater as opposed to like 10 feet away from a 55" TV and the improved sound is ruined by the sound of everyone else in the theater.

Right now Matt needs to comes back to this and retrack of his sayings for how he will say disney plus is making premium access for $30 is absurd.

I'm perfectly happy watching content at home, but it doesn't compare to the experience of a theatre. Not just the jumbo jumbo screen, and surround sound, but also the shared experience, the collected laughs and shared screams.

Too a certain point like for myself I have a low health esteem when I’m down and sick I rather watch it on stream but I still like to go out a couple times a month and watch in theaters because you don’t get glare or any distractions at home. I think when you are home you do get some pleasures like pausing to go eat restroom . But you give up getting the theater experience having popcorn or any other thing they sell there Awsome speaker sounds reclining seats and having a time out

Haven't been to a theater in about 15 years. I would go again if theaters had some way of disabling cell phones.

Every Thursday the theater by me has $5 movie tickets. Combined with our annual popcorn bucket ($10 up front, $4 to fill up, lasts for a year), we only spend $14 total for both of us to go to a new movie.

Our theater has new, reclining seats with massage, as well as trays that combine with your cupholder 🤷‍♂️ can't imagine like $20 a ticket lol

I just recently "built" my own home theater. I already had a 60in 4k UHD TV but added a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup for sound. If you've never been in a home theater I'm telling you it's BETTER than ANY theater experience. I for one hope theater at home becomes the norm.
TV excluded I spent less than $1, 500. #Klipsch
