I was on a gun tower, post #9 at ASP II in 1968. I saw the gun flashes when when those 16 inch guns fired. About 30 seconds later I could hear the rounds pass overhead. Then hear those bad babies hitting way inlsnd. Would seem to go on forever.
So even though I could not see the New Jersey firing, I am probably on of the few living persons who personally observed those guns firing in war.

I don't care if a Battleship is outdated, not worth the cost, not as effective as I still love them and would love to see a modern big gun ship commissioned

As much as I love that song, I would have paid money to hear the original sound

Got to sleep overnight on this ship when I was in cub scouts over a decade ago. Really cool experience.

February 1968 I called in for Arty support.
I was told our position was too close to friendlies.
Even Mourter support was out of the question.
I was told to STBY..A voice came over the radio clear as a bell.
Send you message he said a 10 digit grid was sent.
Requested a "Battery of 3 fire for effect" Voice came back stating we were danger close We were under heavy fire and not looking good "FIRE FOR EFFECT"
voice came back ROG ...SHOT OUT...I vaguely remember hearing a woof from my west. seconds later the world stopped and took a dump.
I later learned PATTY CAKE niner niner hadn't completed sea trails [whatever that means].
GOD bless the crew on PATTY CAKE niner niner.

I feel like the WW2 pacific vets would feel right at home in Southeast Asia. Hot sticky and miserable while sending 1900 pound shells 15 miles inland

I still find it crazy how we were using Iowa Class battleships as late as the Gulf War

When I was in high school in Santa Ana, Calif., you could hear the distant booms of the New Jersey firing her main batteries during gunnery exercises off the coast. I can't remember if it was 1968 or 1969, but classes were in session and the relative quietness in the rooms allowed the repeated booms to be heard at our school's location a few miles from the ocean.

She sits majestically across the river and I can’t feel nothing but awe, even resting peacefully at anchor she still projects power…..🫡

I worked with a Vietnam V who said those rounds sounded pretty awesome going overhead.

If an Iowa class battleship was maintained in battle ready condition, I think the donations could cover a significant part of the expense.

Where is the rest? Been watching this over and over.

Fun fact: the 16 inch gun turrets on the USS New Jersey where the only ones of all the Iowa Class Battleships to be automated.

Not sure Norman Greenbaum fits with the feels, but we all love the big booms don't we.
