an unplanned video coming up soon #shorts #hamradio #behindthescenes

Very much an unplanned and unscripted video to the point I had not even tied my hair back for it
I had misplaced the mono to stereo adaptor and coupler I use to connect a speaker (a Nokia branded one that goes with a car kit for the old-school Nokia phones) with a mono (TS or tip-sleeve) into the speaker socket on the Yaesu FTM-400XDE (TRS or tip-ring-sleeve where tip is VFO A, ring is VFO B and sleeve is ground but not used in this case).
This involved cutting the plug off the speaker and one off the "aux" lead used to run between the coupler to the radio, then soldering wires and heat shrinking the joints and over all the wires.
this resulted in a connection that connected the speaker across the tip and ring of the plug, and it will work with radios with a mono speaker socket as I tried this with a CB.
from what I understand, for audio through VFO A the ring connection is used as return path, for VFO B the tip is used as return, I think Yaesu do say in the FTM-400 manual that using a TS (mono) plug in the socket could damage the audio circuits.
I'm not 100% certain if this applies to the FTM-100 as this was single VFO not both, it may be applicable to the FTM-300 and the new FTM-500 as these appear to both have dual-VFO but cannot say for sure as I don't have either of these radios as the former is not something I can budget for and the latter is not released at time of recording this in February 2023
