Hold the press! I'm discovering new information that Leon McAuliffe with Bob Wills' Texas Playboys may have recorded an electric guitar 3 days prior to Jim Boyd. Need to find a recording to find out if there was a solo during those sessions!

Killer. My first was when Django went electric briefly in the early '50's. Had the vinyl, it "grew legs" & left. Still have the memory. Thanks!

George’s daughter has a Facebook page dedicated to her father. She may have records of his equipment for the session.

"Osage Stomp"/"Get With It" - first recordings by Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys, Dallas, September 23, 1935. Lots of firsts here - first country record with drums, first recording on amplified guitar by Leon McAuliffe, "Get With It" is first recorded vocal by Tommy Duncan.

Nice solo for sure. I need to go through it about 10x to get it. It doesn't seem too complicated but it still is tricky mentally to hear the fast melody.

That was great! I even liked the basic solo on "Hot Dog Stomp". Instead of being buried it was loud and clear over the whole band. BTW who'd you think would have recorded the first solidbody guitar solo (Les Paul?)

Excellent content. George Barnes was very a cool player who tends to get lost in the crowd.

Hot dawg stop by Roy Newman and his boys 1935 September. This was evidently recorded at 5:08 Park Dallas Texas where other v o c a l i o n records artist recorded also. Such as Robert Johnson in 1937. The first to use electric instruments where the Western swing bands around Dallas-Fort Worth. 508 Park is still standing and owned by the First Methodist Church around the corner. In 2004 with Eric Clapton was here in Dallas doing his Crossroads Blues Festival he was able to get into the building with Doyle Bramhall jr. And record some of the same Robert Johnson songs that were recorded in the same room. That is all they DVD called blues for Robert J. As I understand it the Methodist Church is getting ready to reopen it as a recording studio and Museum. Also it has a courtyard with a stage for live performance. It is situated across the street from where the homeless are fed at the crossroads stewpot. 508 Park is also where Charlie Parker first recorded., also don't forget the light crust doughboys recorded there one of the same days that Robert Johnson recorded. They are the longest running band in the history of recorded music, since 1931. It seems like Dallas should be a contender for the hippest city on earth. Howdy from Dallas Texas

love this stuff rj. hope you have checked out 'steel guitar blues' from the twenties. I cant remember the jazz band but the arranger was ground-breaking for the period. I feel it has a feel that is modern and stands up today. and something like 1927. steel guitar of course a decade before robert johnson, cool.

Hey RJ, this is a great video.  George Barnes was an amazing guitarist and right up among the greatest names every.   Have you checked out the YouTube video "Bach Fugue in G Minor-- George Barnes and the Renaissance Quartet"?   Very few guitarists ever get to his level, he was a true master.

Len Fillis POSSIBLY recorded an electric guitar solo on the 17th of April 1936. The record was called "Dipsomania" . I state "possibly" because according to the following blogspot where this information came from "we shouldn't discard the possibility of a pick-up and amplifier being just attached to an acoustic guitar." -
Here is his solo:
So the jury is out as to whether it was a "true" electric guitar recording. This was obviously after the 1935 solo that you have shown. But it was before George Barnes. Thank you.

What I'd really like to know is who invented the first rock-style guitar solo like the one in the Kingmen's "Louie Louie"
