With all due respect, this is also oversimplistic. The race issue was Aryan. Even more to the point was non-disabled Aryan. It was a false idea of genetic superiority. 6 million jews were murdered. Polish, disabled Germans called Aryan, educated people, gay people were also killed.

It was about racial superiority, which is a bullshit idea. Further, it was about fascism, the dividing of people to control them.

Whoopie was wrong. But she was trying hard to be right. And she was close to right. It is about human hatred based on false ideas of genetic superiority, mostly race.

Before anyone comes for me, I have Jewish ancestors.

It wasn't just Jewish people. Yes, they were the biggest group, but not the only group. The Holocaust was about getting rid of anyone who did not fit the perfect Aryan image the Nazis had. The Roma were murdered as well. People with intellectual disabilities. Gay people. Political prisoners. All ended up in camps as well. Many also ended up murdered by the Nazis in the same way.

As a white Jewish woman, I understood where Woopie was coming from. I knew she was wrong but I also knew her experience and interaction with the word RACE has always been about color. I agree with you that it is a reflection of the failure to fully educate our population.

Totally agree. Whoopi said something dumb but it pales in comparison to the stuff that McCain was able to get away with for years. I think Whoopi's apology was genuine and it served as a good teachable moment. The suspension is absolute BS.

I also understand what Whoopi was trying to say. Judaism is a religion, not a race, just like Catholics and Islam. If anyone was wrong, it was the Nazis with their talk of their Ayrian race and how Jews weren’t pure enough, and conveniently used that as an excuse to eradicate great numbers of them.
But as far as wars go, and who was killed in the Holocaust, it was mostly whites, not blacks. So I see what she was trying to say. If you want a war based on race, it’s the Civil War in America.

But the holocaust also targeted the Romani and homosexuals. So it could be said it wasn't entirely about race.

By definition, she is 1/2 right. Race is physical and social similarities. Jews are an Ethnicity and Ethno-Religious Group but many of them were socially german and physically white. I understand her confusion and agree this was a learning opportunity.
