The secret is that the performer will tell the audience to look at their face so they won’t notice the other hand in the cape to activate some kind of switch. There is a collection of thin plastic masks and when he swings his head, there is some kind of mechanism in the helmet/mask to pull the mask and reveal a new one.

How ever, when it was first introduced, it wasn’t some kind of mechanism, they did it manually with their hand.
