A Day In The Life Of An Astronomer

Many people think that professional astronomers spend their days gazing up at the night sky through a telescope. But this is far from reality. In this video, I'll show you what a professional astronomer does at work in a typical day and explain why it's much more interesting than simply staring through a telescope.

I’ve wanted to be an astronomer since I was a kid. I’ve dropped out of college twice because i was doing majors that I felt pressured to do. I was always told that astronomy isn’t a real job. But it’s my passion. Today, I’m going to enroll in school and start my journey of pursuing my dream career. I suck at math. But I’m willing to learn. Wish me luck.

I am 12, and planning my career as an Astronomer. My goal of life is to observe existence and to experience the vast void that is filled with wonders to be discovered. Thanks for the little information! :)

The only reason I started watching this was for A school assignment. When I began to watch closely I actually became intrigued. Very interesting!

My biggest goal is becoming an Astrobiologist at NASA❤. Probably harder coz I'm Asian and not a US Citizen.

A Cardiff based Astronomer and YouTuber, how have I not heard of you before?
It's nice to see somebody else is trying to disprove the stereotype of an astronomer just being some old guy looking through a telescope all night, all the ones I use are robotic so I can do it from home with a cuppa in hand.

Very interesting indeed. However, at the end you said "I can't think of anything more boring" when talking about looking through a telescope with your own eyes. I disagree. To me there is a star difference between looking at the brilliant images from the Hubble and other observatories on a computer, and the somewhat relaxing nature of going outside in a really dark piece of land and observing the sky with your own eyes the old fashioned way. The difference can be seen when you show non Astronomers, let's say Saturn, through a telescope and an image from Cassini. I think (as it does me) it helps them grasp what they're seeing and get a better understanding of the solar system we live in. Same for galaxies and star clusters. I could go on but I think I made my point.

this is cute. so many young children researching about what they want to do in the future. i wish my parents had encouraged me to think about my career when i was a kid

Less than 5% of phds in astronomy become career astronomers due to lack of positions in the field. Consider this before embarking on this journey

Heeeey! Old telescopes are not boring! They're one of the most romantic things in existence!

When you want to go into astrobiology (more so the astronomy part) I’m good at algebra, physical science, biology but I HATE geometry so it’s making my gpa dip😩 hopefully I’ll make it into college lol

i’m 16 and this was my dream job only a year ago, still is i have to admit. unfortunately i’m a dreadful mathematician and no matter how many times we have to write research papers during high school in philippines i will hate it no matter what so it’s out of the question :(( so i stuck to humanities instead! oh well!
