In Hungary, this belief about weather prediction goes with bears. They come out of their caves and check if they can see their shadows, and if they do, it's more winter. Just like groundhogs. What makes this interesting is that there are no bears in Hungary.

Groundhog day always makes me wonder - What if we're wrong about ancient civs. Most people don't take the day seriously, really it's just for fun. But in the far future when America and Canada are just long forgotten Nations how would a historian describe our almost religious worship of a small furry animal that predicted the seasons?
