Chopin's Funeral March, the 3rd movement of his 2nd Piano Sonata, Op. 35. Written a few years before the rest of the Sonata, this piece was the basis for which the rest of the movements were written. Although highly regarded today, this Sonata was viewed quite negatively by his fellow composers and critics at the time of publication. Schumann even said that there was "something repulsive" about this movement in particular, Mendelssohn too viewed the sonata negatively. All of these critics are long gone, yet this Sonata lives on, and we can now appreciate the massive importance of the work. I hope you have a great Monday ♥

Definitely one of Chopins most melancholic pieces ever written. Chopin was stated saying to a friend “is corpse any worse than I? A corpse… knows nothing of father, mother, or sisters… it cannot speak its own language to those around it.” Which influenced his sonata op 35. it’s like he was voiceless and alone and so he could only speak through the piano

Most people are only familiar with a few measures of this piece, which is a shame because it's so incredibly beautiful. It really captures the feelings a person has and goes through when someone passes....sadness that you will miss them, and the joy of wonderful memories of them.
